2.4.9: Link Purpose (Link Only)

What it means

At AAA, the purpose of every link must be clear from link text alone, without surrounding context. This is stricter than 2.4.4.

Each link should stand on its own when read from a links list.

How to fix it

• Remove vague phrases like “click here” entirely.
• Include file type and size in download link text when relevant.
• Differentiate repeated actions (for example “Edit billing address” vs “Edit shipping address”).
• Review automated link lists generated by screen readers.

Quick examples

• Good: Link text reads “View invoice #1042 (PDF)”.
• Bad: Link text is only “PDF” with no topic.
• Good: “Edit profile photo” and “Edit password” are distinct links.
• Bad: Ten links all say “Details” pointing to different records.
