2.2.3: No Timing

What it means

Timing is not an essential part of the event or activity presented by the content, except for non-interactive synchronized media and real-time events. This AAA criterion removes most time limits entirely.

Simulations and games may still need timing when it is the point of the activity.

How to fix it

  • Remove arbitrary countdowns from learning and shopping tasks.
  • Offer untimed modes for quizzes and practice exercises.
  • Keep real-time exceptions only where delay would invalidate the experience.
  • Review third-party widgets for hidden timers.

Quick examples

  • Good: A training quiz can be completed without any countdown clock.
  • Bad: A job application portal forces submission within five minutes with no extension.
  • Good: A live auction keeps its timer because bidding depends on real time.
  • Bad: A static article hides content until a 60-second timer finishes.
