1.4.6: Contrast (Enhanced)

What it means

Enhanced contrast requires at least 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text against its background. This AAA level goes beyond the minimum AA requirement.

Use it when your audience includes people with significant low vision.

How to fix it

• Target 7:1 contrast for body copy and 4.5:1 for large headings.
• Avoid mid-grey text on off-white backgrounds that barely pass AA.
• Re-check text placed over photos or gradients — overlay a solid scrim if needed.
• Document colour pairs that meet enhanced contrast in your design system.

• Good: Body text at #595959 on white exceeds 7:1 contrast.
• Bad: #767676 grey text on white passes AA but fails enhanced contrast.
• Good: White headline text sits on a dark semi-transparent overlay over a photo.
• Bad: Thin white text sits directly on a busy light photograph.
